In phonics we will be continuing to practice short vowels, blends- such as in sled, dress and grab, as well as the digraphs th, sh and ch. Students are working hard to blend sounds together automatically to read words smoothly.
We have been talking a lot about the word FLUENCY in first grade. Fluency means to read smoothly and accurately, with expression and comprehension. To build fluency students read the same story at least 5 times. We talk in class that this helps us to learn the words and to not sound choppy, or like a robot. It is amazing the growth I have already seen with their fluency!
We ended the year with Opinion Writing! Students were able to give their opinion on a topic and then support their opinion with 1-3 reasons! Students gave their opinions on their favorite books, favorite toys- even why they think that they should have an extra recess! Try keeping a journal over the summer! This is a great way for your first grader to remember all of the fun he or she had, and to keep up their writing skills! If you are traveling over the summer, your child can write postcards to friends and family telling all about their adventures!
In science we will be investigating light and sound. We will be learning about vibrations and how they can make a sound. Students will be able to use string and cups to make a telephone!
